What is a flat roof? While in the name, this roof type isn’t completely flat. It still has a slight pitch, usually around 1/4″ to 1/2″ per square foot, so water will still effectively drain and not cause any pooling. They require proper drainage in order to be successful. Geo Roofing knows how to get the angles of the material laid to the correct specifications to ensure adequate water run-off. It takes experience and know-how, and we have it!

Choosing the Best Flat Roofing Material for You

There are two main roofing styles, and they come in a wide variety of material options.

A Built-Up Roof (also known as BUR) has two main options: Hot Mop and Modified Bitumen.

  • Hot Mop is one of the oldest and most reliable methods of installing or repairing an existing flat roof. While hot mop sounds a little goofy, the name explains exactly what it is. Extremely hot asphalt tar is applied to the roof using a large “mop.”
  • Modified Bitumen is a newer option for built-up roofing systems. This hybrid style combines asphalt membranes with polymerized rubber or plastic and is then reinforced with fiberglass, creating a sturdy yet flexible roof.

There is also Single-Ply Roofing, which includes TPO, PVC, and EPDM.

  • TPO, or thermoplastic polyolefin, is made of a rubber blend and reinforced with a scrim to add flexibility and strength. It is regarded as easy to install and has good UV resistance.
  • PVC, or polyvinyl chloride, is made up of chlorine and ethylene, combined with plasticizers for flexibility while being applied, and then reinforced with fiberglass or polyester. PVC roofing is valued for its long-lasting durability and resistance to natural and chemical elements.
  • EPDM, or ethylene propylene diene monomer, is a synthetic rubber used for more than just roofing in the construction industry. It is extremely flexible and durable, making it ideal for roofing, waterproofing, and sealing.

What Goes into a Flat Roof?

A flat roof system has many layers. After the structural deck and insulation, the first layer is a protective, waterproof membrane. When all else fails, this membrane is the last line of defense against water damage. The next section of flat roofing material may vary depending on the type that is being installed, but it is the reinforcement layer. When installed correctly, it builds a stable, durable structure and reduces the likelihood of tears and holes developing. The final layer is surfacing. This layer is made to protect the other layers and building structures that it covers. Making sure that everything is well covered and protected will ensure a long-lasting roof.
